How to Commission Me

- Contact me on social media @cadencelewisart or email me at [email protected] with a description of what you want done.- References are required! (You can choose to share these with me in your original message or after I accept your commission.)Possible refs include:
- written descriptions, photos, sketches/art you’ve done, sketches/art another artist has done, piccrews, character creation from a video game, pinterest boards, mood boards, collages, etc. I can work with whatever material you have as long as you give me a starting point, but if there are details or elements that you want to be a specific way, having a reference for that will help me draw it accurately. (If I have follow up questions that require more ref I will ask.)
>>> I also like to learn about the personality/backstory of your character, including their name and pronouns. You can share as much or as little info about this as you like, but I find it helpful when coming up with poses, character designs, facial expressions, symbolism, etc! Plus it's just fun.
>>>References of poses or compositions are helpful as well (stick figure sketches are great!), but if you don't know what you want yet we can address it in the sketch phase.

- Commissions will be worked on in the order they are received. If there is a queue when you reach out to me I will let you know. Generally I ask for one month from when I start working to complete a piece of art, but it is likely I will finish sooner. This is also dependent on the complexity of the commission.
- By commissioning me, you agree to my Terms of Service:

Commission Process

- I receive the first half of payment (or full payment upfront if you prefer).- I start by doing rough sketches. I'll show you a few and get your feedback on which you prefer and any details we should change until we have an approved sketch.
>>> A "rough sketch" is the first step in the process where we figure out character design, poses/composition, etc, without focusing too hard on what color everything will be.
>>> If you don't have a definitive character design for your character, I'll put together a few character designs based on your description and references. You can pick from your favorite elements and I'll combine it into a final sketch. Please have references handy for anything specific!
- I create color sketches based on the approved rough sketch (same feedback process as before).
>>> The "color sketch" step is when we decide what color each element of the design will be. Often this includes adding the lighting.
- With an approved color sketch, I'll begin the final painting. I'll share rendering progress as I feel necessary to approve or keep you updated!- I'll share the final artwork with you and give you the chance to offer any last feedback and revise as necessary.- I receive the last half of payment and then I send you a digital high resolution jpg file of your commission. If you would like a different file type, feel free to ask!
>>> I usually send the final files through email regardless of where we've been discussing the commission, so at this point I'll ask you for your email address if I don't have it already.

Example of each step of this process shown below (rough sketch, revision, color sketch, revision, final art):

Projects that don't fall exactly into these guidelines will have a similar process:As an example, for this book cover, I created multiple rough sketch options of different poses and backgrounds. Sketch 2 was selected. Then I did color sketches, and color sketch B was selected. Finally, after rendering the artwork, I wanted client feedback on the type layout. Layout 1 was selected.
To finalize the project, I put the type, texture, and painting together in a final image and created a mock-up.

FAQ

What counts as a "simple background"?

A simple background is variable but includes things like a solid color, a gradient, or simple texture. It could also include the suggestion of an environment such as grass underfoot or blurry people.
As stated in my prices, anything more detailed than a simple background will add a fee (amount dependent on complexity). If you have any questions about your commission idea, let me know and I can give you a quote or offer suggestions that align with your budget or concept!

What is your revision policy?

I will send you regular updates throughout the process (sketch, color, etc) to receive your feedback on. With each of these update stages I give you the chance to ask for revisions. I will apply any requested revision and move on to the next step once it is approved!I'm happy to make as many revisions as necessary! I care about honoring your vision as my commissioner and to accurately representing the details of a character to the best of my abilities. Although please be aware that large revisions that affect previous stages of the process may incur extra fees. Additionally, while revision is encouraged at each stage of the process, if any part requires excessive rounds of revision then a small additional fee will apply.>>>For example, if you want to change a detail that doesn't greatly affect previous stages of the artwork (like the color of a character's eyes, making a piece of clothing dirtier, adding jewelry, etc) I can do that at any time, but if you want to make a significant revision (such as changing the character's pose after I have moved on from that step) there would be an additional fee applied. If you are unsure if a revision you want is appropriate for the step we are working on, please feel free to ask and we can discuss the change.I will always notify you about the possibility of an additional fee and allow for agreement on this change before I go ahead with the work.

How do you take payment?

I take payment through PayPal and Venmo. This policy is fairly strict so please try to respect that. However, I also understand that extenuating circumstances exist and sometimes these sites have problems. If you run into issues sending a payment, let me know and I'll discuss the problem with you.>>>Per my terms of service, refunds can only be negotiated before I’ve started working. If I am unable to complete the commissioned work for any reason, I will fully refund you.
